Simplest Way Of Measuring Hair Length

Wigs are measured from the root of the hair at the crown to the ends. Wigs are available in various lengths from as short as 8 inches up to 30 inches.  The measurement you see that is listed on the wig is approximately where the hair on the wig will fall after it is installed. Let's say the wig is 15 inches, this means that the hair will land about 15 inches from the crown of your head.

There are several simple ways to measure hair length:

1. Measuring Tape

This is the easiest and quickest way to measure the length of the hair. Using a cloth measuring tape will be more flexible and easier to handle. Begin by taking a strand of hair and start measuring from the crown of the head to where you want the hair to fall.  Do not hold the tape too tight and make sure to leave a bit of slack. Do measure at least three times to compare results and ensure that you get the accurate measurement.

2. Ruler and Hairband

If you do not have a measuring tape handy, you can use a ruler and a hairband. First, place the hairband on the crown of your head and move it all the way down to the tip of the hair. When done, place the hairband on a ruler to find out the measurement.

3. By Hand

You can even use your hands to measure the hair length if a measuring tape is not available.  When you spread your hand, the span of the tip of the thumb to the tip of your pinkie is about 9 inches. Take a pen and a piece of paper to mark the point of your thumb to the pinkie. Then when you can find a ruler, use it to get the exact measurement.

For straight hair wigs, the hair will appear in its actual length because there are no curls or bends on the hair.

For wavy hair wigs, the wig may appear a bit shorter 1 to 2 inches than it actually is because of the wavy texture, it depends on how tight the curls are.

If the wig is A-line cut or has layers, you may want to measure the sides as well to know exactly where the hair will fall when you put it on.
